Water legend nominated for prestigious award
Hydrogeologist Steve Tickell was nominated in the Australian Water Association (AWA)'s Water Professional of the Year Award category at the 2023 NT Water Awards earlier this year and is a finalist.
Flora and Fauna staff members Glenn Wightman, Lou Elliott and Nick Cuff recently participated in the Jingili Primary School Science Expo. This event has been running for the past 11 years and provides kids from preschool through to grade 6 the opportunity to learn about the obvious, and maybe not-so-obvious, places science pops up in their school and day-to-day lives.
Maria Island small mammal survey 2023
Greetings from the Limmen Marine Park in the Gulf of Carpentaria! We're thrilled to share the highlights of our recent 4-night small mammal survey on Maria Island. Collaborating with ecologists from Terrain Ecology in Kangaroo Island, South Australia, rangers from the Li-Anthawirriyarra Sea Ranger Unit, and Parks and Wildlife, our mission was to study the fascinating small mammals that inhabit this unique ecosystem.
4D Gamba Fire Table on display
The Gamba Fire Mitigation team recently showcased the 4D Gamba Fire table at Girraween Primary School’s annual Field Day. The 4D Gamba Fire table brings alive an exciting, animated version of Charles Darwin University’s online fire behaviour simulation. The model is designed to improve landholder knowledge of bushfire planning and mitigation strategies, and create a better understanding of the changing bushfire landscape due to invasive species such as gamba grass.
Consultation open on proposed decisions for managing several brominated flame retardant chemicals
The Australian Government, through the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) is inviting feedback on proposed scheduling decisions for managing four chemicals of concern for the environment, these being brominated flame retardants used in textiles, electronics, and aircraft and automotive spare parts.
