Move to Reuse: A step towards sustainability in the Northern Territory
Territorians can get ready to make the Move to Reuse and step towards a circular economy! The recent release of a public tender called for proposals to implement a self-sustaining reuse model aimed at increasing the reuse of food and beverage items across the Northern Territory.
The Northern Territory (NT) Government recently took a bold step to promote circular economy businesses and sustainability with the release of a public tender by the Department of Environment, Parks, and Water Security. The tender, which was open from 13 – 27 March, called for proposals to implement a self-sustaining reuse model aimed at reducing single-use plastics and increasing the reuse of food and beverage items across the region. From cups and takeaway containers to cutlery and straws, the objective is clear: to decrease the volume of single-use plastic items consumed in the NT by embracing reuse.
At the heart of this initiative lies a commitment to combatting the environmental challenges posed by single-use plastics. By encouraging the adoption of reusable alternatives, the NT aims to curb plastic pollution and promote a circular economy mindset.
This initiative supports the NT Government’s commitment to realise the economic opportunities of the circular economy under Strategic Priority 3 of the Northern Territory Circular Economy Strategy 2022-2027 (strategy). It also aligns with broader commitments made by the Environment Minister and all Australian Environment Ministers to phase out certain problematic single-use plastics. The strategy highlights key items proposed to phase out and ban, including plastic bags, straws, utensils, expanded polystyrene containers, and more.
But this isn't just about eliminating plastics and growing our economy with exciting new circular business models. It's also about engaging the community in the decision-making process.
Consultation on the proposed single-use plastic phase-outs was open from 8 March to 14 April last year. Territorians had the opportunity to voice their concerns and contribute valuable insights. This important community feedback will inform the development of policies and public awareness campaigns, ensuring that decisions are reflective of the needs and values of the people of the Northern Territory.
By embracing innovative solutions and engaging the community, the Northern Territory is paving the way for positive change.
Move to Reuse isn't just a call to action—it's a commitment to a more sustainable future.
