Water Resources Division is celebrating 70 years highlighting and acknowledging staff for their hard work and contribution to water management.
70 years of Water Resources - 1980s
In the early 1980s, a water control district was declared in the Alice Springs area to control development and use of the groundwater resource. While in the north, mangoes began to be grown commercially across the Darwin rural area, driving the first public awareness campaigns on the protection of the water resources.
WMB at Daminmin art and culture festival: engaging communities in invasive species management
The Weed Management Branch (WMB), represented by Gerald Danao, participated in the annual Daminmin art and culture festival, held from 10 to 11 July during NAIDOC Week.
Smart water use detection: AI-powered parcel-level water use monitoring for the Darwin rural area
The Water Resources Division has developed an internal web-based analytical tool to estimate vegetation water use on land parcels.
WMB at the 11th ecosystem services partnership world conference
The Weed Management Branch (WMB) participated in the 11th ecosystem services partnership (ESP) world conference, held from 23-27 June 2025 in Darwin, NT. This prestigious event brought together global experts to share insights on ecosystem restoration, invasive species management, and nature-based solutions.
July 2025 buffel grass update: one year since declaration
In June 2024, buffel grass was formally declared a weed under the Weeds Management Act 2001.

DBAD hits the Alice Springs show
Earlier this month our team took part in the Alice Springs show day, connecting with the local community while promoting an important campaign to address illegal dumping in the region, Operation: Don't be a Dumper (DBAD).
DBAD survey results inform next steps in dumping prevention
As part of output 3 of the Alice Springs Don't Be A Dumper (DBAD) campaign, community survey results have now been analysed, marking an important milestone in the campaign’s evidence-based approach to tackling illegal dumping.
