WMB at the 11th ecosystem services partnership world conference

The Weed Management Branch (WMB) participated in the 11th ecosystem services partnership (ESP) world conference, held from 23-27 June 2025 in Darwin, NT. This prestigious event brought together global experts to share insights on ecosystem restoration, invasive species management, and nature-based solutions.

A highlight of the conference was the sole NT Government presentation at the climate and sustainability session, where Gerald Danao presented the WMB’s innovative project on controlling the invasive coral cactus (Cylindropuntia fulgida var. mamillata) using biological control. The presentation focused on the successful application of the cholla bug (Dactylopius tomentosus), which has shown potential to be effective in just 10 months since its first release in August 2024.

Gerald’s presentation was well-received, emphasising the importance of innovative and sustainable solutions in ecosystem management. He explained that the use of highly specialised biocontrol agents was low risk, low cost, and most importantly, self-sustaining. This project, a key part of an integrated weed management program, combines various strategies to manage invasive species and promote long-term ecosystem health. The success of the coral cactus biological control highlights the program’s effectiveness in addressing complex weed issues.

Gerald highlighted, "the challenges we are facing in the environment are understood through science and technology, and thus the only answers to many of our issues lie in these two.” He further added, “This is not just science, but policy in action, backed by collaboration", noting that the project is a partnership between the Northern Territory Government and the New South Wales Department of Primary Industries.

This achievement has not only demonstrated the WMB’s leadership, but it has also reinforced the importance of multi-jurisdictional collaborations, advancing our mission to protect and restore Northern Territory ecosystems.
