Mimosa pigra on the Phelp River
Team members from the Weed Management Branch (WMB), George, Bethany and Sara, recently travelled to assist the Yugul Mangi Rangers with survey and control of Mimosa pigra along the Phelp River in southeast Arnhem Land. The WMB has been working with the Yugul Mangi and Numbulwar Numburindi rangers since 2010, with the long-term aim of eradicating Mimosa pigra from the area.
NT experts put new satellite research into context
When new scientific studies emerge about the Northern Territory’s groundwater systems, our scientists step up to investigate the findings and integrate what’s useful into our growing knowledge base. The recent paper by Ndehedehe et al., which used satellite data to suggest the Cambrian Limestone Aquifer (CLA) is drying out, prompted exactly that kind of collaborative scientific response.
Measuring Impact: Croker Island at the Heart of Gall Fly Research for Siam Weed Management
'We cannot control what we do not measure.' Croker Island is now the centre of a two-year collaborative study launched in August 2025 by the NT Government’s Weed Management Branch and the Queensland Department of Primary Industries (DPI).
Have Your Say – Draft Katherine Water Plan
The Department of Lands, Planning and Environment is developing a new 10-year water plan for Katherine (2026–2036). A draft plan has been released for a 4-week public consultation period where you can have your say.
WMB at the Top End Native Eco-Fair
The Weed Management Branch (WMB) reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the Territory's landscapes at the Top End Native Eco-Fair, held at Jingili Water Gardens on the 23 August 2025. A participant at the event since 2021, the WMB continues to champion informed weed management across the Northern Territory.

Thanks to recent legislative changes which allow for water notices to be published online, the Water Resources Division launched the water notices portal.
Water Resources had a water planning focus in the 2010s
Five water allocation plans were declared in the decade: Western Davenport Water Control District Water Allocation Plan 2011–2021, Alice Springs Water Allocation Plan 2016–2026, Berry Springs Water Allocation Plan 2016–2026, Katherine Tindall Limestone Aquifer Water Allocation Plan 2019–2024, Oolloo Dolostone Aquifer Water Allocation Plan 2019–2020.
Priority prickle bush project launches with a BANG
The project targets prickly acacia and mesquite infestations across the NT, is funded through the Australian Government’s Supporting Communities Manage Pest Animals and Weeds Program and aims to accelerate the eradication of these high priorities weed species through coordinated efforts with landholders, ranger groups, and regional stakeholders.
