Listed waste transporters key focus for environmental regulator
The Environmental Regulation Division has launched a targeted campaign to assess compliance among high risk listed waste transporters.
This initiative aims to enhance industry compliance and to improve environmental outcomes across the Northern Territory.
Under the Waste Management and Pollution Control Act 1998 (the Act), certain types of waste —classified as “Listed Wastes”—require strict oversight to protect human health and the environment. Transporting, handling, and storing these waste types requires an Environmental Protection Licence (EPL).
In the 2023–24 financial year, the division conducted targeted inspections at 15 EPL facilities. These inspections identified key areas for improvement, particularly in listed waste storage and spill response preparedness. Addressing these issues has become a priority in the Environment Compliance Plan 2024, guiding the division’s regulatory focus for 2024–25.
As part of this compliance campaign, site inspections are underway to ensure EPL operators have the necessary controls to prevent spills and minimise environmental risks associated with listed waste handling.
The campaign is consistent with the division’s PACTT (proportionate, accountable, consistent, targeted, and transparent) principles. Our goal is to ensure that waste transporters comply with regulatory requirements while actively avoiding and mitigating environmental harm.
Results of this campaign will be shared in the division’s annual report card later this year – keep an eye out for it and stay informed by visiting the NT EPA website.
