Kenbi land claim
On 5 December 2024, the Kenbi Land Claim was finalised. The last of the land parcels on the Cox Peninsula were granted to the Larrakia Development Corporation and Kenbi Land Trust.
This is a significant moment given the land claim was over 47 years old, and the one of the most complex in Australian history. After many years of negotiations and collaboration with the Australian Government, Northern Land Council, Traditional Owners, Larrakia people, local government, mining, industry, recreational fishing and community member stakeholders this department has taken the lead to ensure the last land claim settlement arrangements were completed.
The Crown Land Estate team was commended for its leadership, drive, cross-government partnership and tenacity to tackle the complex Aboriginal land claim and stakeholder environment. In particular, Hannah Feneley, who has worked closely with Northern Territory Government colleagues from the Department of the Chief Minister and Cabinet and the Solicitor for the Northern Territory, and the Commonwealth Government over many years to bring this matter to a positive conclusion.
For those interested in fishing, water sports and camping, the public can enjoy permit-free access to the Cox Peninsula intertidal zone, coastline and nearby islands.
Most importantly, finalisation of the Kenbi Land Claim is a positive step for the Aboriginal landowners to progress commercial and land management initiatives for economic development and cultural outcomes.
