Community unites for a cleaner Alice Springs

Published

In conjunction with Clean Up Australia Day - Alice Springs residents came together on Sunday, 2 March, for a successful community clean-up day as part of operation: Don't be a dumper - an ongoing initiative to tackle illegal dumping in the region.

The event saw strong public participation, with volunteers from the public as well as from key stakeholder groups, including Alice Springs Town Council, the NT EPA, the Department of Lands, Planning and Environment, Crown Lands, and Lhere Artepe Aboriginal Corporation.

Braving nearly record-breaking March temperatures, volunteers worked tirelessly to remove nearly 700kg of waste, showcasing their commitment to the cause. An additional ~1500kg of waste was removed from the cleanup area by contractors following the public event.

This action aligns with Output 4 (remediation) of operation: Don't be a dumper, focusing on restoring areas impacted by illegal dumping, and Output 6 (monitoring), as the clean-up helps identify future intervention zones for ongoing monitoring and improvement.

The data collected during the clean-up will help inform future enforcement and education activities under the initiative, ensuring resources are targeted where they are needed most.

Further clean-up days are already being planned to maintain progress and continue making Alice Springs a cleaner, safer place for the community.
