Amendments to the Heritage Act 2011 have been made as part of the Lands, Planning and Environment Legislation Amendment Bill 2025.

Statutory notices under the Act are now digital and will be published on the agency’s website.

The Heritage Branch works with the community, land owners and land users to conserve the unique and diverse cultural heritage of the Northern Territory. The branch provides high level expert advice to land users in the management and conservation of cultural heritage.

The branch administers the Heritage Act 2011 (NT) and the Underwater Cultural Heritage Act 2018 (Commonwealth) which protect a wide range of cultural heritage including Aboriginal archaeological places, historical archaeological places, built heritage and submerged wrecks.

The branch supports the Heritage Council,  administers the NT Heritage Grants Program and the Rates Relief Program, and works with other government departments to conserve Government-owned heritage assets.
