Public consultation

The Heritage Act 2011 requires the Heritage Council to seek public comment when either:

  • inviting submissions on the heritage significance of a place or object and whether the place or object should be permanently declared a heritage place or object (section 26)
  • inviting submissions on the heritage significance of a class of places or objects and whether this class should be a protected class of places or objects (section 45)
  • inviting submissions on a proposal to revoke the heritage declaration of a place or object (section 59).

The Heritage Council will consider all submissions it receives when deciding on its recommendation to the Minister. If the Heritage Council decides to make a recommendation to the Minister, the Minister is provided copies of all submissions.

To meet its obligations under the Act the Heritage Council carries out consultation with the community through the have your say website.

Anybody can make a submission.
