Water insights across the Northern Territory
The Water Resources Division has released 8 annual State of the Water Resource reports for 2024-25. This means every water plan now has an annual report, which is a major achievement for division.
This year marks a major milestone for the Water Resources Division. For the first time, we have delivered State of the Water Resource reports for every water allocation plan area across the Territory.
These reports act as a clear and accessible 'report card' on the health of our water systems, summarising how each water resource is performing and how well its water plan is being implemented.
The reports bring together key information on:
- rainfall
- groundwater levels
- aquifer recharge
- water monitoring results
- regulatory performance
- progress on management strategies.
Each report provides a snapshot of local conditions, including how measured results compare with predicted creek flows and groundwater trends. This gives valuable insight into the accuracy of departmental models and confirms that water plans continue to be managed using the best available science.

After an extraordinary wet season, the division is already looking ahead to the delivery of the 2025–26 State of the Water Resource reports.
Over the past year, we have worked closely with stakeholders, including the Water Advisory Committees, to gather feedback on the content and format of the reports. This feedback is informing improvements to the accessibility and relevance of future reports, helping to strengthen the Territory’s understanding of its water resources.
