New soil coring rig strengthens land assessment capability

Published

After nearly 12 months of careful planning, procurement and delivery coordination, the Land Assessment Branch has successfully added a new Eziprobe Centurion soil coring rig to its capability, marking a significant increase in the department’s capacity to deliver high quality soil information.

This milestone reflects the dedication and collaboration across the team to ensure that the right equipment was sourced, configured and delivered to meet the unique challenges of operating in the Northern Territory’s diverse and often remote environments. From initial specification through to final commissioning, the procurement process was guided by a clear objective, to enhance the Territory’s capacity to collect accurate and consistent soil data at scale.

Supporting better decisions across the Territory

Soil is the foundation of the Territory’s agricultural and pastoral productivity; reliable soil data underpins informed decision making. The new Eziprobe Centurion rig will enable the Land Assessment Branch to undertake deeper, more efficient and more consistent soil core sampling across varied landscapes.

These samples contribute to the ongoing development of detailed soil mapping across the Northern Territory. By linking soil characteristics to mapped soil types, the department provides critical insights that support:

  • Agriculture: helping producers match crops to soil capability and improve yield outcomes
  • Pastoral operations: enabling better land management, stocking decisions and sustainability practices
  • Industry and development: informing site selection, planning and environmental management.

This data driven approach ensures that decisions are grounded in robust, scientific evidence, reducing risk and improving long-term outcomes for businesses and Territorians living and operating in the Territory.

Built for Territory conditions

The Eziprobe Centurion has been selected specifically for its durability, versatility, and ability to operate in challenging conditions. Its advanced coring capability allows for deeper and more intact soil samples, improving the quality and reliability of the data collected.

Importantly, the rig’s efficiency will also increase field productivity, allowing teams to cover more ground while maintaining high standards of data integrity. This is particularly valuable in a jurisdiction as geographically vast and environmentally diverse as the Northern Territory.

A foundation for future growth

This expanded capability reinforces the Northern Territory Government’s commitment to supporting sustainable land use and economic development. High quality soil data is a long term asset; one that not only benefits current landholders and industries but also informs future investment and policy decisions.

As the Land Assessment team begins deploying the Eziprobe Centurion across the Territory, the impact will be felt across multiple sectors. Better soil knowledge means better decisions and ultimately, stronger outcomes for the Territory’s economy, environment and communities.

This investment is more than a new piece of equipment; it is a commitment to evidence based practice and to unlocking the full potential of the Territory’s land resources.
