National Science Week – getting to know the water beneath our feet
National Science Week – 15 to 23 August 2026.
What better way to celebrate National Science Week than getting out into the community and talking all things water, science and groundwater!
This year, Water Resources headed out to Bees Creek Primary School to spend the morning with their Year 5 and 6 students and what a great bunch of budding scientists they were!
The session was all about encouraging students to think about the world beneath their feet and giving them a fun, hands-on introduction to groundwater.
We started with a quick introduction to groundwater and what happens beneath our feet, before bringing out the star of the show – our aquifer model! It was definitely a highlight of the morning.
Students got involved in the demonstration and were able to see groundwater and the movement of water through an aquifer in action. There were plenty of hands going up, along with some fantastic questions and plenty of curiosity.
It was wonderful to see how interested and curious the students were, particularly when we started talking about bores and groundwater in their own local area. As a rural school, many of the students could relate the science to their own homes and surroundings – making the learning a little closer to home.
And, of course, we couldn’t let our newest groundwater enthusiasts leave empty-handed! Each student received a water droplet toy and activity booklet to take home to keep the learning flowing.
A huge thank you to Bees Creek Primary School for having us! It was a fantastic morning and a great opportunity to showcase what Water Resources does, connect with our local community and hopefully inspire the next generation of scientists, water experts and groundwater enthusiasts.
