Marrakai water licence information session

Water Resources and NT Farmers held an information session for new water licence holders in Marrakai.

Water Resources, together with NT Farmers, recently hosted an information session in Marrakai for new water extraction licence holders in the area. In an ongoing process to license previously exempt water use in the Darwin rural area, more than 50 new water licences have been granted in the region during the past few years. The information session was an opportunity for licence holders in the area to ask questions and for the department to provide practical guidance on water licence requirements.

The session walked licence holders through the key obligations under a water licence, with a focus on how to correctly read water meters, record usage and submit meter readings on time. Licence holders also had the opportunity to ask questions and discuss common issues, including water licence application requirements, meter installation and maintenance, reporting timeframes and what to do if a meter is not working or needs replacing.

The engaging session highlighted why water licensing, accurate metering and regular reporting of water use is important. Water licences help manage sustainable and fair access to water. Accurate meters and consistent reporting of water use provide the department with important information about the water resource and water demand in the area, which informs planning and the effective protection of water resources for current and future users.

Water Resources will continue working with NT Farmers to support growers, with a second workshop planned on water meter installation. Water Regulation Officers are also maintaining ongoing engagement with new licence holders in the Adelaide River and Marrakai region, including one‑on‑one support where needed, to help navigate the process and meet their obligations with confidence.
