Darwin Surf Life Saving Club secures long-term tenure at Casuarina
A project more than a decade in the making has delivered long-term certainty for one of the Northern Territory's most recognised community organisations.
On 16 October 2026, Crown Lease Term 2710 was registered over Lot 12991 Town of Nightcliff, securing the Darwin Surf Life Saving Club's long-term home at Casuarina and formally resolving historical land tenure arrangements associated with the club's operations.
The Darwin Surf Life Saving Club has provided volunteer surf lifesaving services, water safety education, training programs and opportunities for Territorians to connect through sport and recreation for decades. As the club evolved over time, parts of its operations expanded onto adjoining land outside its existing lease area, creating a need for a permanent tenure solution.
Recognising the importance of the club's contribution to the community, Crown Land Estate worked closely with the club to formalise historical land use arrangements and secure appropriate tenure for the land required to support its activities.
Following detailed assessments, stakeholder consultation, rezoning, subdivision and consolidation processes, a new Crown lease was offered to the club in 2025 and accepted later that year.
The registration of the new lease marks the successful conclusion of a complex project and provides certainty for the club to continue delivering lifesaving services, training volunteers and supporting the community for generations to come.
For Crown Land Estate, the project highlights the value of proactive land administration in achieving practical outcomes that support both community organisations and the broader public interest.
