Adelaide River Water Advisory Committee considered presentations on scientific research at meeting 8
The Adelaide River Water Advisory Committee continued its important contribution to development of the Adelaide River water allocation plan at its 8 meeting.
Since its establishment in 2024, the committee has worked to understand the science underpinning the plan and to ensure community perspectives are reflected in its development. Discussions have focused on protecting environmental and cultural values, maintaining the free-flowing nature of the Adelaide River, supporting sustainable water use, and preserving the Territory lifestyle valued by local communities and reflected in the committee’s value statement:
'We are committed to ensuring the Adelaide River Catchment remains healthy and abundant with life. Our healthy catchment enhances cultures, communities and economies. We keep tomorrow in mind as we plan for water security and the enjoyment of future generations of Territorians.'
A major focus of the committee's work has been understanding the scientific evidence that will inform water management decisions. Since 2022, the department has undertaken an extensive science program across the catchment, resulting in the publication of seven technical reports examining groundwater, surface water and ecological processes. The committee has been particularly interested in how the findings from these studies will translate into management rules within the water allocation plan.
At meeting 8, the committee received presentations from the authors of the updated hydrological modelling and from the Chair of the CSIRO Technical Advisory Panel, which assessed ecohydrological risks across the catchment. These presentations provided valuable insights into how the river system functions and may be expected to respond to water extraction under different potential future development scenarios.
The scientific presentations informed discussions on estimated sustainable yield (ESY) and management rules. Through these discussions, the committee consolidated its views that the plan should establish an ESY and management rules that are responsive to the dynamics of the water system, reflect realistic development opportunities, and provide confidence for all water users while safeguarding the environmental and cultural values of the catchment.
