A lasting foundation for the Larrakia Cultural Centre

Freehold title to the Larrakia Cultural Centre site was registered in the name of the Larrakia Development Corporation on 19 October 2026, marking a significant milestone in the realisation of a long-held vision for the Larrakia people.

Located at Stokes Hill Wharf on the Darwin Waterfront, the centre represents a longstanding aspiration for the Larrakia people to establish a permanent cultural home on their traditional Country. The registration of freehold title provides long-term tenure certainty for the site and supports its ongoing management and stewardship by the Larrakia Development Corporation for future generations.

The milestone reflects years of collaboration between the Northern Territory Government and the Larrakia Development Corporation and Larrakia Cultural Centre to progress the land tenure arrangements needed to support the centre's development and long-term operation. Through this partnership, a shared vision has been realised for a dedicated cultural destination that reflects the history, identity and continuing presence of the Larrakia people.

Construction commenced in May 2024 and was completed in September 2026, transforming a prominent waterfront site into a landmark destination for culture, education and community connection.

The centre officially opened in October 2026, welcoming community members, visitors and stakeholders to experience a space dedicated to celebrating and sharing Larrakia culture. While the opening marked the completion of the physical development, the registration of freehold title establishes the tenure certainty needed to support the centre's future growth and operation.

For the department, the outcome demonstrates the important role the department plays in supporting community, cultural and economic outcomes. By working closely with the Larrakia Development Corporation to finalise the site's tenure arrangements, the department has helped establish a lasting foundation for the continued sharing of Larrakia stories, traditions and cultural knowledge.

The registration of freehold ownership of the site is a significant milestone for both the Larrakia people and the wider Territory community, helping preserve and celebrate Larrakia culture and heritage for generations to come.
