Water education for the next generation
As part of the 70 years anniversary of Water Resources, the Division sponsored the water module of the Landcare NT BioEd project.
This innovative initiative from Landcare NT brings together science, education, and community to delve into the fascinating world of Top End ecosystems!
Water Resources staff Ursula Zaar and Hannah Groves designed and delivered the water module to eight primary schools across Darwin over last few months.
The module enables students to discover the vital role water plays in the Top End environment, sustainability and daily life.
The students are provided the opportunity to explore the challenges of water security, quality and conservation, and learning to understand the importance of environmental flows and how the water cycles through different areas in the landscape.
The interactive sessions include using the groundwater model to demonstrate and explain how groundwater moves through an aquifer, and a river simulation where they learn how to measure environmental flows.
The BioEd project will continue in Semester 2 to schools in the Palmerston region.
