Recognising excellence in high-risk waste management

The Environmental Regulation Division is continuing its targeted site inspections campaign to assess compliance among high-risk listed waste transporters.

Site inspections are a key tool used by the environmental regulator to monitor compliance of listed waste handlers across the Northern Territory. When non-compliances are identified, the regulator takes proportionate action, which may include education and advice, warnings, fines, or requiring corrective measures. Equally, the regulator celebrates and promotes good compliance.

Recognising excellence in listed waste handling

Alongside monitoring for non-compliance, the regulator also acknowledges businesses that demonstrate best practice waste management. One such example is Ant Galactic, which has set a high standard in asbestos handling.

In February 2025, the environmental regulation team conducted inspections at 7 high-volume waste facilities to review their handling of high-risk listed wastes like tyres, batteries, and asbestos, as well as their emergency response preparedness.

One of these sites was Ant Galactic's Winnellie premises. Ant Galactic is authorised to handle asbestos under its Environment Protection Licence (EPL), as required by the Waste Management and Pollution Control Act 1998 for all businesses dealing with listed wastes. The company, also a WorkSafe-licensed asbestos removal business, operates across the Northern Territory and plays a key role in servicing remote communities.

Ant Galactic’s commitment to meeting regulatory requirements was evident in their best practice approach to asbestos handling. Moving beyond makeshift containment methods, the company has implemented a custom-built mobile decontamination unit, improving both safety and efficiency in their on-site asbestos handling activities.

Ant Galactic’s record-keeping practices demonstrates a clear understanding of their responsibilities as an EPL holder. Its proactive attitude and commitment to best practices set a strong example for the industry.

The inspections, including those at facilities like Ant Galactic, highlight the regulator’s commitment to transparent compliance and enforcement processes that promote responsible industry practices, contributing to safe and sustainable development.
