Priority prickle bush project launches with a BANG

Published

The project targets prickly acacia and mesquite infestations across the NT, is funded through the Australian Government’s Supporting Communities Manage Pest Animals and Weeds Program and aims to accelerate the eradication of these high priorities weed species through coordinated efforts with landholders, ranger groups, and regional stakeholders.

Project objectives include:

  • re-engage with stakeholders to ensure a coordinated and strategic approac
  • survey and map remaining infestations to guide eradication schedules and long-term monitoring
  • support landholders with technical advice, regional expertise, survey work, and herbicide assistance
  • provide training in the use of the NT WeedMate mapping App for improved weed data collection.

Last week, the WMB team worked with landholders at Avon Downs to survey and control prickly acacia and mesquite. Fieldwork will continue over the next two weeks at Mittiebah, Mt Drummond, Gallipoli, and Rocklands, assessing current infestations and supporting local management efforts.

WMB staff are also partnering with the Mimal Rangers to survey and control prickly acacia infestations around Bulman Weemol area.

Once these areas have been completed, the focus will then shift to the Victoria River District (VRD) next year.

The Eradicating Priority Prickle Bushes project represents a renewed, Territory-wide effort to reduce the spread of invasive woody weeds and protect the NT’s pastoral industry and natural landscapes.
