NT EPA Approves New Guideline for the Safe and Sustainable Reuse of Biosolids
The Northern Territory Environment Protection Authority (NT EPA) has approved a new guideline that provides a clear framework for the safe, sustainable, and beneficial reuse of biosolids in the Territory.
Biosolids are nutrient-rich organic materials produced during the treatment of sewage. When treated and managed appropriately, biosolids can be a valuable resource - helping to improve soil health, fertility, and water retention.
It’s important to note that biosolids are not:
- septic waste
- untreated sewage sludge
- industrial or food processing sludge
- animal manures or abattoir wastes
- household organic waste.
The approved guideline outlines how biosolids can be reused safely while protecting the environment, public health, and cultural values.
It aims to support resource recovery and circular economy principles by encouraging beneficial applications such as:
- enhancing agricultural soils with nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and organic matter
- improving soil structure and moisture retention
- generating renewable energy through processes like biofuel production.
The NT EPA thanks everyone who contributed to the consultation process earlier this year. Your feedback helped shape a guideline that balances innovation with responsibility.
