Listening and learning about water science in Ti Tree

Published

Water Resources manages water in the Territory, and as part of our commitment to continual improvement, we are working to actively involving Aboriginal Territorians in water management.

As part of this, an Aboriginal Reference Group was established in Ti Tree to provide feedback on the midterm review for the Ti Tree water allocation plan 2020-2030.

The group felt to effectively communicate the review to the people of Ti Tree, translating the findings from the review into Anmatyerre was needed. This month, the group agreed upon the final translated messages.

The Central Land Council (CLC) and the Division took the opportunity at the meeting to share updates on their work within the Ti Tree basin. The Division presented the Aboriginal Water Science project plan, funded through the National Water Grid.

The project aims to build water literacy, support intergenerational knowledge sharing, and strengthen Aboriginal perspectives in water management over the next three years.

Members of the Aboriginal Reference Group will be strongly involved in guiding and shaping of Aboriginal water science into the next Ti Tree water plan.

Members will additionally aid in communicating both Western and Aboriginal water science relevant to the wider community, building on the translated midterm review messaging and increasing awareness of water management in Central Australia.

Working together with the Aboriginal Reference Group, the CLC, and other stakeholders provides an invaluable platform for open discussion, shared learnings, and collaboration on future projects.

This partnership approach not only ensures that cultural knowledge and community values are embedded in decision-making but also plays a vital role in helping to bridge the gap and foster more inclusive, respectful, and sustainable water management outcomes.
