2025 Developing Northern Australia Conference

Staff from the Office of Water Security recently attended the 11th Developing Northern Australia Conference, held over three days in Cairns. The event brought together leading voices from across industry, government and investors sectors, united under the theme 'Securing Australia’s Future by Driving Northern Development.'

Recognised as a key forum for advancing the future of Northern Australia, the conference provided staff with valuable insights into the region’s most promising opportunities for growth. Industries and sectors represented were diverse, and included mining, agriculture, minerals, renewables, gas, education, health and wellbeing and workforce capability development.

The experience deepened staff understanding of the key economic, social and environmental issues shaping the region. A central theme throughout the event was the importance of Indigenous led development, with speakers highlighting successful partnerships and pathways that prioritises Aboriginal leadership in regional growth strategies.

In addition, critical discussions focused on water management and availability, a vital issue underpinning sustainable development across Northern Australia. Another theme was the importance of diverse economies shaping a more resilient north.

Nerida Beard, Executive Director of the Office of Water Security chaired a few panel sessions including Nature Positive and Decarbonised Investment in Northern Australia and Sustainable Water Development. These sessions explored practical solutions and emerging opportunities for diversification in the economy through low-emission investment and sustainable water-based developments.

Nerida had the honour of accepting the nomination on behalf of the NT Government, that the Territory will host the 2026 Developing Northern Australia Conference in Alice Springs. The announcement was warmly welcomed and highlights the central role that Central Australia will play in shaping the next phase of Northern development.

The conference also featured a collaborative booth shared by various government departments, including the Department of Lands, Planning and Environment, Department of Agriculture and Fisheries and Department of Logistics and Infrastructure. This joint effort allowed stakeholders to engage and learn about government initiatives aimed at opportunities for sustainable water development in the Northern Territory.
