Operation: Don’t be a Dumper - Tackling waste crime in the Alice Springs region
Operation: Don’t Be A Dumper (DBAD) has officially been launched, representing a collaborative initiative involving multiple government departments, the local council and community organisations working together to address illegal dumping in Alice Springs.
Illegal dumping of waste is a significant and ongoing issue across the Northern Territory. In recent years, reports of illegal dumping in the Alice Springs region, in particular, have been steadily increasing.
In an effort to curb illegal dumping activities and protect the environment, Operation: Don’t be a Dumper (DBAD) has been officially launched to tackle waste crime across the Alice Springs region.
Waste crime, which includes illegal dumping, presents a serious threat to public health, ecosystems, and the local economy. DBAD represents a collaborative initiative involving multiple government departments, the local council and community organisations working together to address this pressing issue. By working together, we are better able to share resources, intelligence, and best practices - creating a comprehensive strategy for identifying, targeting, and reducing waste crime activities in the local government municipality of Alice Springs.
This is consistent with our regulatory PACTT principles (proportionate, accountable, consistent, targeted and transparent): being targeted in an area with increasing reports of illegal dumping of waste.
As part of the project, cameras and temporary signage have been strategically deployed in areas with a high incidence of illegal dumping. These cameras aim to deter illegal dumping, enabling a rapid response to incidents, and gathering evidence to pursue compliance and enforcement actions against would-be offenders.
Aerial imagery and boots-on-the-ground monitoring surveys will commence shortly to determine the long-term effectiveness of any prevention measures put in place as a part of the project.
