DLPE builds its regulatory expertise
Earlier this month, staff from the Department of Lands, Planning and Environment participated in a global summit to share learnings on implementing and enforcing environmental law.
Water and environmental regulators from the Department of Lands, Planning and Environment (DLPE) attended the Australasian Environmental Law Enforcement and Regulators neTwork (AELERT) International Network for Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Global Summit in Brisbane.
The summit brought together 390 delegates from 23 countries to share learnings on implementing and enforcing environmental law.
Effective risk based regulatory systems are vital to delivering safe and sustainable development in the Northern Territory. DLPE administers more than 30 laws including the Environment Protection Act 2019, Water Act 1992, and Petroleum Environment Regulations 2019. The summit is an investment in building our team’s regulatory expertise.
Regulators from the department shared learnings from recent policy development and insights into how other countries deal with issues across the regulatory spectrum gained through the Churchill Fellowship program. Our team was also involved in running workshops, facilitating expert panel discussions, and concluding each day of the summit with key learnings.
The department is an active member of AELERT which promotes and develops professional environmental regulation. As a result, Darwin will host an in person AELERT event in December to turn learning from the summit into actionable strategies for the jurisdiction.
