Summary: The Weed ID Deck NT app does not collect, store, transmit, or share any personal information. All data is stored locally on your device and never leaves it.

1. About this policy

This privacy policy describes how the Northern Territory Government, Weed Management Branch ("we", "us", "our") handles information in connection with the Weed ID Deck NT mobile application ("the App"), available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

This app is a free, offline-capable reference tool designed to help landholders, land managers, rangers and the general public with identifying declared weed species in the Northern Territory of Australia and understanding recommended management methods.

By using the app, you agree to the practices described in this policy. If you do not agree, please discontinue use of the app.

2. Information we do not collect

The app is designed to operate without collecting any personal information. Specifically, the App does not:

  • collect your name, email address, phone number, or any other identifying information
  • access, collect, or transmit your device's location (GPS)
  • access your camera, microphone, contacts, or photo library
  • create or maintain a user account
  • require you to register or log in
  • track your activity, usage patterns, or behaviour
  • use third-party analytics, advertising SDKs, or crash reporting services
  • share any data with third parties.

3. Data stored locally on your device

The app stores the following information exclusively on your device. This data is never transmitted to us or any third party:

  • App preferences: Your chosen text size and whether automatic dataset updates are enabled. Stored using standard iOS/Android device storage (NSUserDefaults on iOS; AsyncStorage on Android).
  • Weed dataset: A bundled reference dataset of NT weed species (names, descriptions, images, control methods). Stored in a local SQLite database on your device.
  • Saved weeds ("My List"): Any weed species you choose to bookmark within the App. Stored locally in the SQLite database on your device and never uploaded.
  • Sync version: A version number used to check whether a newer dataset is available, stored locally.
  • Onboarding status: A flag indicating whether you have completed the App's first-launch introduction screen.

Deleting the app from your device removes all locally stored data permanently.

4. Dataset updates (optional)

The app includes an optional automatic update feature. When enabled and your device has an active internet connection, the app may check for an updated weed species dataset hosted on a Northern Territory Government content delivery server.

During this check, your device makes a standard HTTPS request to a government-operated server. This request may include technical information automatically provided by your device's operating system (such as an IP address), as is normal for any internet connection. We do not log, store, or process this information.

You can disable automatic updates at any time in the app's Settings screen. The app is fully functional offline using the bundled dataset.

5. Images loaded online

When your device is connected to the internet, the app may load higher-resolution weed images from a Northern Territory Government content delivery network (CDN). This is a standard HTTPS image request. No personal information accompanies these requests, and we do not use these requests to identify or track individual users.

When your device is offline, the app displays lower-resolution images bundled within the app — no internet connection is required for core functionality.

6. Children's privacy

The App does not knowingly collect information from children under 13 years of age (or under 16 in jurisdictions where a higher age applies). Because the app collects no personal information from any user, it is safe for use by people of all ages.

7. Third-party services

The app does not integrate any third-party analytics, advertising, social media, or tracking services. It does not embed trackers from Google, Apple, Meta, or any other third party.

The app is distributed through the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. Your use of those platforms is governed by Apple's and Google's own privacy policies, which are independent of this policy.

8. Security

Because the app does not collect or transmit personal information, the risk to your privacy is minimal. Data stored on your device is protected by your device's own security features (screen lock, device encryption, etc.).

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will publish the updated policy at this URL and update the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of the app after any changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.

10. Your rights and contact

Because the app does not collect personal information, there is no personal data held by us about you that would need to be accessed, corrected, or deleted.

If you have questions about this Privacy Policy or the App, please contact the Weed Management Branch:
