Privacy statement for newsletter subscriptions

The Department of Environment, Parks and Water Security (the department) utilises a third party service Campaign Monitor to deliver electronic newsletters.

This privacy statement describes how the department collects and uses your personal Information collected when you subscribe to the department newsletters.

Personal information has the same meaning as in the Information Act 2002 (NT).

What information do we collect about you?

If you subscribe to receive news from the department, you will need to provide your name, email address and other details in order for us to deliver news specific to your requirements.

In addition, when you subscribe you will be consenting to send the following additional information about you at the time you first subscribe, and every time you click a link in an email sent to you via the service (the additional information):

  • your server (or IP) address
  • the day and time you visited the site
  • the pages you visited on our site
  • the address of the last page you visited
  • the operating system you are using
  • rough geographic location (down to the city)
  • language (e.g. American English)
  • internet service provider (e.g. Telstra)
  • the type of browser and version you are using.

This additional information will be held in an account against your email address by Campaign Monitor.

Information collected may include:

  • all information from the sign-up form
  • comments, questions, stories, guestbook posts
  • survey responses, quick poll responses, map pins
  • general site activity such as document downloads, videos viewed, images viewed
  • information on the technology used to access the site.

Campaign Monitor may collect the additional information via web forms, as well as through use of automated collection tools such as cookies, web beacons and Flash player codes.

Why does the department collect this information, and how is it used?

Information collected is for the purpose of distributing news from the department electronically to subscribers. In particular:

  • your email address is collected to provide you with regular information about your selected topics, updates or changes to this service
  • the Additional Information is collected to determine whether the service is meeting the strategic communications objectives of the Department, and as feedback for continual improvement of communications materials.

The department will:

  • only view data collected through this service in aggregate, for purposes such as determining the number of Territorians in different locations that are viewing news, or which news items attract the most community interest
  • only seek to view the data of an identifiable individual where this is authorised or required by law.

The department uses third party service Campaign Monitor to collect and handle your personal information on its behalf.

If you subscribe to this service, you will be consenting to Campaign Monitor and the department using your personal information for the purposes stated.

The department may use your personal information for the purposes stated above, and any other purpose listed on a collection statement at the point of collection, or in any other way made clear at the time of collecting the personal information.

Additional use of information by the department

Campaign Monitor indicates that it may additionally use information gathered through this arrangement for further purposes, beyond the needs of the Department.

By subscribing and continuing to use this service, you are consenting to further use of the information by Campaign Monitor.

In particular, Campaign Monitor indicates that it may transfer Personal Information to contractors or third parties for various business purposes (including marketing), or where required to do so by law.

If you subscribe to this service, you will be consenting to Campaign Monitor transferring your information to further organisations for further uses beyond the scope of this subscription as set out in Campaign Monitor’s Privacy Policy and Campaign Monitor’s terms of use.

While the department is liable for Campaign Monitor’s handling of information in relation to the provision of the department's news service, the department is not responsible for any use of your information by Campaign Monitor and further third parties to the extent that this has been done with your consent.

Campaign Monitor is based in the United States of America (USA) and is subject to the laws of the USA. Your information (including your IP address) will be transmitted to and stored by Campaign Monitor on servers located outside Australia.

Disclosure of your information to other organisations

The department may share information obtained under this service with other Northern Territory Government agencies, and to ministers for these agencies.

This information will only be provided in aggregate form from which the identities of individuals will not be able to be ascertained.

The purpose of disclosing this information is to coordinate government strategic communications and further the communication objectives of agencies in accordance with government functions.

Information may also be disclosed as required by law.

Security of your information

The department will take all reasonable measures to prevent unauthorised access to, or disclosure of, your personal information while it is held by the department, including under the agreement with Campaign Monitor.

Removing consent to use of the information

You can unsubscribe from the department's news service at any time by selecting the 'unsubscribe’ option sent in every email sent to you by Campaign Monitor.

If you wish to withdraw consent for continued use of your information by the department, we suggest you unsubscribe and contact the department (see contact details at the end of this privacy statement) and state that you withdraw your consent.

You should be aware that Campaign Monitor may separately retain its own records of your information in accordance with Campaign Monitor’s privacy policy and terms of use.

Third party providers

From time to time, the department may, through the department news service, send you invitations to complete surveys, provide feedback or otherwise provide a response via a third party provider.

Links to third party sites may also sometimes be linked to from content you receive through this service.

This privacy statement does not apply to third party websites or digital services which may be linked to from content published via the service. We recommend you read the privacy statement of the relevant service when you access these sites.

Providing information about other persons

If you provide any feedback to the department, you should not provide personal information about any other person in a manner that might identify them.

Questions or concerns

You may seek corrections to your personal information that the department has collected if you believe it is inaccurate, out of date, incomplete, irrelevant or misleading.

The department is required to take reasonable steps to correct personal information to ensure that, having regard to the purpose for which it is held, the information is not inaccurate, out of date, incomplete, irrelevant or misleading.

You may also seek access to your personal information that the department holds.
