Kakadu Plum Management Program

The NT Government is responsible for managing the use of the Territory's native plants and animals. It supports the sustainable use of wildlife, particularly where this supports livelihoods of Aboriginal people and communities and encourages good land management.

Aboriginal people have a long history of medicinal and customary use of Kakadu Plum (Terminalia ferdinandiana).

The Kakadu Plum is a small to medium sized tree endemic to the monsoonal tropics of northern Australia. It is becoming increasingly commercialised due to its extraordinary health benefits.

The tree is well known for having high levels of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) and Ellagic Acid, which has anti-oxidant values.

These values make it an attractive natural ingredient for its:

• nutraceutical
• pharmaceutical
• anti-microbial and
• preservative values.

That's why the first ever management program for Kakadu Plum has been developed.

The management program aims to ensure wild populations of this native plant and its habitat are adequately maintained across the Northern Territory well into the future.

The program was developed in collaboration with Territory NRM, Charles Darwin University, several Aboriginal organisations and interested parties.
